Really wanted to like these shoes, as I found the new SC elites to be a bit bulky/heavy for my tastes (when it comes to a supershoe). In theory, this appears to be a streamlined version of the elites, better suited for short distances (10k and under). Unfortunately there are several critical design fails here that led to me ultimately giving up on it completely before I even started…
1. Lace enclosure & lace length is RIDICULOUS. Idk who thought that these rectangle shaped laces are sufficient, but they’re not. Thin rectangular shaped lace holes also mean you’d be jamming any other regular lace in there. Mind was blown here as the elites also have them, but these are much worse. New balance needs to just STOP with these laces/lace holes.
2. Heel area is minimal and catastrophic. Just trying them on, I could already feel my achilles being shredded, even with a higher sock. Very little ankle support for a carbon shoe, and the minimalist design is going to rip apart your skin.
3. Weird glued in dimpled insole feels like you’re stepping on a cheese grater.
4. Sizing is awkward, I’m a 9.5 in mostly every running shoe (especially new balances) – the 9.5 was rubbing on my toes, yet the 10 was swimming on me.
Aside from the major design flaws, what actually stinks is that the 9.5 still felt like a fun shoe to run in…I’m just certain they’d be shredding my feet in numerous places, so back they went. I think NB is onto something here, but it’s going to take another iteration or 2 to get this one right. For now, I’d stick to the SC elite…or go the tried and true route with other brands – Endorphin, Metaspeed, or Vaporfly.
