These shoes handle amazingly for anybody in need of a hiking, trail running/racing, or comfortable/durable all terrain shoe. I tested these shoes running/hiking in Hawaii and the Indo Pacific on roads, grass, clay trails, jungles, and technical rocky trail hikes.
Out of the box: The shoe has an extremely lightweight upper section that is breathable yet provides enough durability and protection to prevent rocks or other debris from entering the shoe. The gaiter attachments feel very secure for when added protection is necessary. The padded ankle cup is an interesting feature I have never experienced on a shoe before but seems to add a large amount of secureness in the heel cup. The tread and sole have a similar feel and weight to the Hoka Tekton X, which is my preferred trail racing shoe for 5k-24k trail races, but also has more cushion for added comfort. The protection around the toe box seems to be larger than most trail shoes I have used in the past, but does not make the shoes feel clunky in the slightest way.
Running/hiking: There is a flare on the heel similar to the Tekton X or other racing shoes that helps the foot roll into the next step very smoothly. The shoes take a while to break in, especially the foam in the upper portion of the heel cup. The extra support around the ankle from the foam takes a little bit of getting used to but creates a great heel lock for technical runs. The shoe feels about 0.5 sizes smaller than what I usually wear, which I believe is a result of the ankle cushion. The technical of the ability of these shoes are unmatched from other shoes I have worn such as Hoka, Brooks, and Salewa. The rubber is incredibly resilient and seems as if its able to hold onto anything whether it be rocks or tree branches while running.
I reccomend these shoes to a person looking for a technical shoes that manages to balance comfort, technical precision, and speed.

I had the pleasure of testing the Altra Olympus 6 on various trails, including the steep rocky paths in the mountains of Colorado, to the muddy trails of the Michigan coasts. As a long-distance trail runner with over seven years of experience, I can confidently say these shoes are a standout.
Performance:
The wide toe box allowed my toes to splay naturally, enhancing comfort and reducing blisters. The cushioning felt like running on soft grass, even on rugged terrain. The Vibram Megagrip outsole provided exceptional traction, keeping me stable on slippery and uneven surfaces that gave me confidence while taking on challenging runs.
Likes:
Comfort: The fit was extremely comfy right out of the box. Although, I did have to size up.
Traction: Excellent grip on all terrains, from rocky paths to muddy trails.
Stability: The balanced cushioning platform and midfoot support prevented ankle rolls.
Areas for Improvement:
I had to shift a size up compared to my other Altra shoes. Also, the softer cushioning on the tread might not be as durable as the rest of the sole and could wear down quickly.
Recommendation:
I highly recommend the Altra Olympus 6 to trail runners of all levels, especially those tackling varied terrains and long distances. Their comfort, support, and durability make them a reliable choice for both daily runs and ultramarathons.
Overall, the Altra Olympus 6 has earned a spot in my go-to gear lineup. I look forward to many more miles with these outstanding shoes.
Happy trails!
P.S. ALTRA gave me this product free to try.

Super comfortable, very grippy on the trail, and well cushioned. My knees were thanking me after today’s hike/down hill trail run.

Another great shoe from Altra. Not much room in my closet !!! Comfy right out of the box and not too crazy of a color.
Vince –
I’ve had every iteration of the Olympus and they keep getting more and more comfortable! I just completed an ultra in the Olympus 6 and it held up to all types of conditions! Happy trails to you!

I’ve used the shoe for over a month now and in no way am I disappointed. I love the look and especially the comfort they offer if I’m at work, hiking or chasing my kids. I am on my feet a large part of the day on various surfaces like tile, concrete, grass, pavement etc. and they are always comfortable and breathable. I liked how easy Altra is to work with and will be buying more shoes from them in the future, thanks!

I’m an avid runner getting about 20-25 miles per week over three runs. I spend as much time as I can on the trail. I started with the Timp for a few seasons, then progressed to the Mount Blanc and always avoided the Olympus because it just looked like it would be too unstable and heavy. I was really surprised with the firmness and stability of the cushioning, and compared to the Mount Blanc there is little to no heel movement. My feet also feel much more protected with this upper versus the Mount Blanc. That said they are a bit heavier, but nothing too noticeable. On the downhill I feel like I can press on the gas with more control. I’d recommend giving them a try!

Really comfortable
My toes aren’t cramped anymore
Love them

I’m an Altra purist and have been for 3 or 4 years. I have road and trail styles, but with the Olympus 6, Altra just outdid themselves. I purchased these for trail running on small gravel/dirt trails around the beach trails in the hills of the SoCal coast. Nothing technical, just a good sturdy and grippy shoe. The structure and protection level in the Olympus 6 is perfect- the toe has protection and the edge and bite of the sole works great. I was also looking for cushion and I would say the cushion is cloud-like. The reduction in fatigue from long runs is really noticed. The shoe is sturdy, but the comfort is level 10. By far my favorite 10+ miler trail shoe I’ve ever worn.
I have to order another pair as these quickly became my dailies. I work in film production and I have lived in these since I purchased them. And not that I care, but I’ve gotten more compliments and asks about these shoes! The best- I can’t say it enough.

Ran two 20 mile trails and completed a 50k all within a few weeks of owning these. I truly love them and have officially found my go to trail shoes.
Nick –
Ive been a big fan of the Olympus for years and several versions. They lost me on this one. It is a tighter fit, which feels a little better than the 5 on technical terrain. They hold my feet well and don’t slip as much as past iterations. But that Achilles pillow is a horrible design. It is a blister machine. I’ve never had blister issues with the Olympus in the past but this new “pillow” just compresses and all that folded fabric and stitching rubs like crazy. I’m surprised it passed testing without a ton of complaints because I’m hearing it from everyone. It’s too bad.
Andy –
As I prepare for my first tail race (10+ yr Altra road runner!), I’m confident I found my best shoe for the transition! I love the cushion and stability-tread the Olympus offers.

I have been a long time Hoka Stinson wearer for hiking but the soles don’t hold up well for Grand Canyon and slick rock hiking. I decided to try the Olympus 6’s and have been very pleased. The Vibram soles are grippy and durable with the same plush cushioning that I enjoyed with the Hokas.
The Olympus runs about 1/2 smaller than the Hokas which caused the hassle of sending back a pair. There was a break in period for the cushioned heel but felt much better after a week. I’m wearing them for a rim to rim later this month and if they do well with that, I’m hooked.

Wearing these shoes is like walking on a cloud! I ruck in these and they’re the perfect combo of comfort and support. Love them!
Juan –
I really love the Men’s Olympus 6. Super Comfy and they go with anything I wear, weather its jeans or shorts. Great for hiking, and even for just everyday wear. I will buy another pair in a different color.

I’m blown away. It’s been a long time since I’ve run in Altras. I had the first couple generations of the lone peak and loved them, but then moved away for whatever reason. When I’d come back from time to time I found that the quality was not quite what I expected. Coming back again this time, I’m happily satisfied both with the quality and the feel of the shoes. It’s been a while since I’ve run in zero drop, but right out of the box I put the Olympus 6 to the test with a ten mile mountain run. They COULD NOT have performed better. Comfortable beyond belief, grippy as all heck, and most importantly, let me feel like I was running “naturally” again. They are a bit on the heavy side, but I’m intending these to be my “long days on my feet” shoe. Also, I’m a bigger guy so I don’t feel like the weight is an issue. If today is any indication, I’ll be happy for many more miles and long days on the trail.
My only complaint is that I now have to buy a pair of Timps to go along with these!!
Well Done Altra and it’s good to be back running in your shoes!
Aleks –
I have very wide feet. I mostly wore sandals, even when running, until I bought my first Altras (Lone Peak). Finally, shoes that fit!
I still ran in sandals, then ran into a sharp rock with my heel, and ended up with planar fascitis.
Lone Peak was no longer cushy enough, so I bought Olympus.
I’ve been wearing them non-stop for the past 5 weeks. They’ve been really good, comfy, no pain at all when I wear them. Never thought I’d enjoy such thick soles, but I do. And they look cute.
Thanks Altra for making shoes I can wear.

These are my 3rd pair of ultras and this particular pair being with the most cushion, I didn’t think I would like it, but Altra AGAIN, has made me a huge fan by the way they make their shoes.
I have had zero issues with the Olympus 6s. They are meant for trail but I wear them on the street as well when I’m training. I’ve read other reviews about heel spillage, but me personally I have not experienced anything like that, if anything just tighten the laces and it’s gone. Again, the wide toe box has relieved my foot and ankle pain. I’ve tried every brand out there and ‘these’ are the ones. I highly recommend.

I need to replace my Lone Peaks (which are total junk now) after the sole started to detach while I was hiking in Wyoming this summer. I bought the Olympus 6 to hike Mt. Whitney and Half Dome in October. I didn’t get to hike Whitney due to weather, but did various hikes in Sequoia and Kings Canyon. These shoes handled wonderfully. The granite in Yosemite was the true test. I hiked roughly 16 miles to and from the half dome summit. These shoes were comfortable, stable, and had excellent grip and traction. I’ve read that the vibram on these has peeled off for other customers. It may be too soon to tell, but the construction and quality of these shoes seems to be built to last. Great shoes overall and I would recommend to anyone looking for more cushion and support for long distance hikes.
Michael –
These shoes work very well for me with the way the heel secures the shoe to my foot while allowing my toes plenty of room. I like them so much that I bought 3 pairs.
Andy –
I wear these while I teach and it helps my knee tendons heal since I tore them. I’m on my feet all day. Going outside in New England in the winter is no problem in these shoes. I’ll try hiking when my knee heals but they are so attractive, I don’t want to get them dirty. I love these shoes!

I live in bishop and run sierra trails everyday. Some of the most rugged terrain you can get on. over the past year I’ve ran 1,000’s miles in these! Several high elevation 50k’s and even a 100 miler in October. Total upgrade from the Olympus 5 the Vibrum has held together much better, the upper way more durable. After a year of use they look as if they could last another year. The fabric around the ankle has torn now but I still run these just fine!
Luke –
I have a super high arch and wide feet. I’ve hard the hardest time finding shoes that are comfortable and don’t give me shin splints or another type of injury. These are amazing. Great grip, comfortable, arch support. I’m looking for regular running shoes that mimic these so I can wear something similar off the trail. Thank you Altra!

This may be my favorite Altra shoe. I also have the Escalante 4, Lone Peak 8, and Via Olympus 2, all in size 12 (same for Olympus 6).
I see some complaining about sizing in these reviews. The truth is that you need to tie zero drop shoes tighter than normal shoes. When I’ve left them loose, I’ve had my feet slip forward and bruised my toes, but when they are tight, this does not occur. This is especially important for the higher stack shoes like the Olympus 6 and Via Olympus 2 because the toeboxes are large and will not automatically secure your feet unless you tie them tight enough.
The Olympus 6 is great because it has a lot of cushioning without the heavily rockered feel of the Via Olympus 2. The insole of the Via Olympus 2 is also more “supportive” in a bad way that can result in blisters, especially around the heel. The Olympus 6 simply lets my heel sit where it needs to and is still secure. I would have expected the opposite given the use cases.
I can easily take the Olympus 6 on my eight mile loop down and up two hills for about 1,300 feet of elevation, with some on trails and some on road/sidewalk. The shoes always feel secure and stable. I also use these on wet/snowy days on the road/sidewalk. I’m tempted to use them on dry days too because of how much more I like them compared to the Via Olympus 2. I hope the Via Olympus 3 is more like the Olympus 6 in terms of the gait/”rocker” and the insole.

My initial experience with the 6 was mixedit felt a bit stiffer than the 5 and less ready for an out of the box big run. However, after a few runs of 5-6 miles, they’ve settled in and have turned out to be excellent shoes. Supportive as you’d expect from an Olympus, and ready for any terrain. Mine now have nearly 100 miles on them, including a 50k, and I haven’t had any issues with the heel feature (but it is a change over earlier editions). While it’s still too soon to say whether it’s my favorite edition yet (I loved 4 and 5), overall I’m sufficiently pleased to snag another pair.
